The outdoor staff at Many Tears take it in turns to write a regular update of events at the rescue. This could cover anything from stories about the dogs to major events so if you want to read about what's been happening at Many Tears here's the place to find out! Please be aware that some images on this page may be quite graphic from time to time. I've got a day off today and can cope with this heat a little better, but unfortunately the dogs a MTAR don't have this luxury. The last three days have been blisteringly hot, yeah, I know this is relatively unknown for rainy Wales. The staff here have really tried to keep the dogs as cool as possible. On my section I was able to plug in two industrial fans above the kennels but still it was hot. So I put towels on the floor in the front of the kennel runs and soaked them with the hose pipe so that the dogs could lie on them. I kept hosing down the corridor and walls of the kennels as well. All staff kept exercise times to a minimum, in the sand schools the sand got really hot and there was only a bit of shade, but I needn't have worried that the dogs didn't have a lot of exercise time because the dogs were so hot that most lay flat out on the floor of the kennels and didn't seem up for bouncing around. We also only took dogs for walks early and late in the day because the tarmac was so hot I'm surprised it didn't melt. Some staff put out paddling pools and some of us took the bedding out of some beds and filled them as high as we could with water so the dogs could paddle when they wanted to. Sylvia asked if we were coping with the heat ok and told us all to keep hydrated and Bill kindly said he'd turn off the fans later in the night instead of me turning them off at 5 o'clock. One of our generous volunteers bought us a couple of boxes of the that famous cola, a refreshing change from the litres of water we were drinking and some kind person bought us ice creams and lollies, which barely saw the inside of the freezer, they don't call the outside staff locusts for no good reason! Yes we work hard and we'll ceat everything! Here's looking forward to cooler weather and seeing the dogs enjoying their exercise times and walks again, and knowing Wales there'll be rain! Tracey 3. 0- 0. 5- 1. Jazper, Shaun, Disney & Waver by Geri I was on my first morning walk with Ribena, the gates had just opened and there was a row of dogs walking down towards the entrance of Many Tears. I can't tell you how I knew, I could just sense it I guess - I hadn't made eye contact with the people walking the dogs, and the dogs looked happy as larry - one of them walking along looking so confident and happy, one of the others gandering along like only a deerhound can - but I just knew those dogs were going to be given up by their owners. I wondered if the office staff knew all these dogs were coming in, and if so, where were they going to be kennelled? Looking for the vegetarian Indian version of the popular General Motors Diet? He tried walking away with them, but of course he wasn't allowed to. Instead, he was taken off to his kennel where he will reside until he finds his new home or a foster home. Jazper was being given up due to his owners working full time and also working away from home. Jazper started to become extremely stressed. He started panting, his breathing became heavy, his heart started racing. He was like this for the majority of the day. He seemed like he was going to go into full blown panic mode and pass out, but, with plenty of love shown him, lots of cuddles with his kennel Daddy Cai, as well as a number of other staff members, Jazper eventually settled down. When I walked into his kennel later on he came running over to greet me, rubbed his body against mine and then lent against me, looking back up at me, appreciating some fuss. He lay down on a big duvet Cai had found him, rolled onto his back and then burried his face into my lap. He was boiling to touch. When I had to go, Cai took over and Jazper burried his face into Cais lap and wrapped his legs around Cai's waist. Jazper really needed to be comforted. It was so sweet, but so sad to see. Jazper is super friendly, very loving, gentle, sweet, calm and docile. He has been great meeting strangers today - some of whom actually took him out for a walk. He proved to be perfect on the lead, is kennel clean and completely housetrained, is good with cats and other dogs, and has been around children as young as 2. It's such a shame that he has found himself in kennels. We are all very worried about him tonight. Edible mushrooms come in all shapes and sizes and there is a great deal you can do with them in cooking, from simple dishes. EXCELLENCE PAR EXCELLENCE! Summer Fields School is proud and elated to recognize the merit and the outstanding performance of its students. Shove aside Atkins, here comes the Rice Diet! That’s right, fellow carbohydrate lovers, welcome the arrival of a carb-based diet, described in a recent book by. Thankfully he has a lovely kennel friend in J- Lo, so hopefully she'll be of some comfort to him - after all she has been through a similar ordeal. As she is about all the dogs here at the centre. But he has really got to her. As has one of our older gentleman who goes by the name of Shaun. I asked who Shaun was, little did I realise it was the boy who resides in kennel 5 who gives me the most loveliest and kindest of smiles and who does a slow little happy side step shuffle dance when I pass by. He is a right little cutie- pie, and when I start speaking to him he gets quietly excited. He is just SO cute he could make your heart burst! I've been meaning to find out more about him, and now I have.. Shaun is an 1. 1 year old male collie, who was given up after a life time of being used to work in a farm environment. He's shown nothing but hard work, loyalty, and no doubt lots of love, and this is where he finds himself. It's heartbreaking. It's so hard to understand.. Shaun doesn't want for much now. His back legs seem to be weakening slightly. All this boy wants is a warm comfy home, a loving family to share lots of cuddles and kisses with, a garden to look out on and have a wander about in and go to the toilet in - he is after all house trained and waits until he is let out here in kennels before he goes to the toilet bless him, and now that he has discovered what a bed is.. I think he'd probably quite like a nice fluffy duvet to lie and doze on and dream about running around and playing.. Shaun is incredibly lovely, extremely affectionate, and super loyal. He is a gentleman, gets on well with all dogs he's met and been kennelled with, and despite everything, is such a happy boy! When you look his way he starts smiling and wagging, and to be honest looks, well, ecstatic!!! Shaun walks well on a lead, but I can imagine him walking off lead and right by the sides of his new forever family once he is settled. Out in the play yard he looks so handsome exploring. As Sylvia says, every day needs to count for this old chap. How unfair is it that an 1. Whose going to adopt him? Disney is, as his initial write up says, a . He feels intimidated, and very stressed. He so desperately wants a family who loves him and who will cuddle and play with him all day and spoil him rotten! He just came back from a walk with a few lovely volunteers. I say walk - he managed to charm the people who took him out so much he hitched a ride on one of the ladys mobility scooters - and on her lap no less! All 3 need to find homes ASAP... And I cannot not mention the poor poor little westie girl who goes by the name of Waver, who I'm sure you are all aware of. I went in to see her for the first time today. She backed away from me at first. I knelt down and spoke to her gently, and I was over the moon at her response - she wagged her tail and came over to say hello to me! I was delighted! She is such a sweetie.. And, an absolute soldier.. It's so hard not to break down in front of her though. She is in such a poor way and has obviously been suffering unimaginable amounts of pain. Words fail me this week. Why has she spent so long in kennels? She arrived at the end of December, had a brief stint in foster, but was returned for being so difficult to get in from the garden - and this is her one and ONLY . Who can blame Hilde though for not wanting her playtime to come to an end and have to go back inside a kennel for a few more hours? She’s been locked up for her entire life and used for breeding – she is just wanting to enjoy her freedom! This is, I think, her favourite game in the World, and her most fun pastime! She is hilarious and fun in the way she runs and jumps around! She offers and encourages us humans to play with her too. She makes eye contact with us, her cheeky expression suddenly spreads across her face, she looks as though she is almost smiling, she lowers her front part of her body to the ground, her bum sticking up in the air, getting ready for us to chase her so that she can RUN RUN RUN!!! And when we play with her she is just DELIGHTED! She runs back and for and around and around until I am run into the ground or so dizzty I can't catch her! I suddenly remember that I am in fact working and have jobs to do, so I say goodbye to Hilde who watches me leave the play school, looking so sad bless her. When I leave, she enjoys wandering and pottering about, having a good nose and sniff, looking so happy, relaxed, confident - and in her element. She can often be caught sunbathing too! When it is time to come in, sometimes, Hilde will run straight back in. Other times she pretends to follow her friends and come straight back in, but runs off again wanting me to play chase at the very last second! Sometimes I have to wait until she is ready, and when she is, she will sit down for me to pick her up and on occssion I do have to call another member of staff to come and help me! After all, we are on a time scale here unfortunately. When that staff member appears, Hilde realises games over, and she might as well sit down and let me pick her up. I enjoy a cuddle, and I think she likes being held like a baby and cuddled too nowadays! More frequently than not though, when I call someone for help, Hilde just runs back to her kennel herself, bless her. She is after all, an exceptionally well behaved little girl. When you're working out several times a week to get fit and lose weight, you want a routine that offers maximum results in the minimum amount of time. Here’s How Much You Must Walk To Lose Weight, It’s Far More Effective Than Running. Lose weight fast and safe. How can I lose weight in a week? Is is possible to lose 10 pounds in 1 week? Is is safe to lose weight so fast? What diet should I follow. How Much Cardio Should I Do To Lose Weight? How Much Is Too Much?(Sometimes a reader will email me a question that needs a full article to answer properly, and sometimes it’s an answer I think others will benefit from hearing. This is one of those times.)QUESTION: I’m trying to lose weight, and I just wanted to know how much cardio you think I should do? How many times per week? How many minutes each time? I’ve also been reading a lot of your articles and I’ve seen you mention that doing too much cardio can lead to muscle loss, so I was also wondering what you’d consider “too much” to be? ANSWER: If you’re a regular reader of mine, then you probably know my general opinion of cardio. For that sort of thing, I actually think cardio is highly overrated and much less useful than most people think/hope it is. I also don’t find typical forms of it (like jogging on a treadmill) to be all that fun or enjoyable. Plus, like the person asking this question mentioned, there is legit potential for cardio to negatively effect muscle maintenance. So to recap, I think cardio is overrated, boring and doing too much has the potential to be problematic. Wow, sign me up! Having said that, it CAN still be a useful fat loss tool. So if you’ve determined that you need/want to do some for that purpose, that’s totally fine and exactly what you should do. The question is, how much? How Much Cardio Should You Do? There’s two answers to this. Let’s start with the broader, simpler one. Not quite rocket science, I know. But I obviously can’t you give an exact amount here because it will vary significantly from person to person based on their specific needs and the needs of the sport they’re training for. Not to mention, as someone who has little to no interest whatsoever in endurance sports, I probably wouldn’t be the best person to ask in the first place. I point this out in a blatant attempt to hopefully start getting less emails from sprinters and marathon runners in the future. Someone Trying To Lose Weight/Get Leaner. From 10 minutes a day to three times a week, how much exercise do we actually have to do to lose weight? Healthista’s Vicky Hadley asks the experts. 6 things other than water you can drink to lose weight. I'm going to teach you how to lose weight with Hashimoto's and give you the exclusive tips that I give to my patients who see me in the office which have helped. Now what about the case of someone who wants to lose weight while ensuring that “weight” is only body fat and not lean muscle. Which, by the way, should be the goal of everyone trying to lose fat (although the obese won’t need to worry until they’re leaner). Well, the first thing you need to keep in mind is that unlike an athlete training for a sport where this sort of activity is a requirement, cardio is completely optional for losing fat. Seriously. The one and only requirement for fat loss is a caloric deficit, and that can happen through diet alone with absolutely no cardio being done whatsoever. For me personally, that’s my preferred way of doing it. If anything, I view cardio (and other forms of “fat burning” exercise like metabolic training) more as a last resort option to go to when I’m trying to get extra lean and my progress has stalled, but I’ve reached a point where I’d rather start increasing calorie output instead of reducing calorie intake. Which is honestly rare as hell. And generally speaking, that’s what I’d recommend to most people. It’s typically more efficient and sustainable to just eat a few hundred fewer calories per day than it is to burn those same few hundred calories every day through additional activity. Or just skip it, period. But hey, that’s just me, and I realize not everyone is like me. It turns out some people prefer to use cardio to set/help set their deficit rather than just doing it through their diet alone. And that’s perfectly fine. More about that here: Should I Do Cardio On My Rest Days? To figure out your maintenance level and create your deficit, read the diet guide.)To make this happen, our example person can: Consume 2. Consume 2. 50. 0 calories per day and do an amount of cardio that allows them to burn 5. Consume 2. 25. 0 calories and do an amount of cardio that burns 2. These 3 scenarios (and other similar ones that use numbers different than the example . As long as the same deficit ends up being there in the end, that’s really all that matters. Your goal is to figure out which scenario is most efficient, convenient, preferable and sustainable for you. Simple as that. If that happens to be the first scenario (my personal preference), that’s fine. How much cardio should you do? Zero. If it happens to be the second or third scenario, that’s fine too. How much cardio should you do then? That depends on your specific needs. As much as you want me to just say “do X minutes of cardio Y days per week,” I hope you see that it’s a bit more complicated than that and the exact amounts for X and Y will vary based on exactly how much cardio you require — in conjunction with your diet — for your deficit to exist. So one person might need to do 6. Maybe 5 times per week. Maybe 3. 25 calories worth 4 times per week. Maybe dozens of other amounts dozens of other frequencies. Basically, whatever amount you need to be doing to burn the calories you need to burn to create your deficit and cause fat loss. Search for something like “calories burned” and get a few million answers. And don’t worry, as long as the amount of cardio being done isn’t too much, you’ll be just fine. What? What’s that you’re yelling at your screen? Oh, I hear ya? By negatively affecting weight training performance, recovery and your ability to maintain muscle and strength in a deficit. The higher the frequency (2- 4 days per week or 7 days per week?), duration (2. HIIT?), the higher that potential risk is. To eliminate this risk, you just need to put together a combination of these 3 factors that doesn’t add up to being “too much.” And so the question is. Because what constitutes “too much cardio” will vary from person to person based on everything from individual work capacity and recovery capabilities to sleep, stress and age. Plus, how your weight training program is designed. For example, are you training with some kind of idiotic high volume bodybuilding routine, or something more ideal for deficit conditions? You know, like my Fat Loss + Muscle Maintenance program from Superior Fat Loss. It all plays a role. So, what might be too much cardio for one person could be perfectly fine for another. For this reason, I still can’t provide the exact X and Y figures you’re looking for. What I can do however is help you know when it’s happening. I want you to pay close attention to everything. Then, I want you to answer the following sets of questions: Is weight training performance going well? Are you maintaining (or possibly improving) your strength levels? Are those workouts feeling okay overall? If so, that’s a very good sign that everything is probably fine. Is weight training performance starting to drop off quite a bit? Are your strength levels beginning to decrease? Are you feeling borderline dead during those workouts? If so, that’s a very good sign that everything is not fine. Similarly, you should also pay attention to how you’re feeling outside of the gym and answer another set of questions: Are you feeling good? Does everything seem fairly normal and typical for what comes with being in a deficit for the purpose of losing fat? If so, awesome? Are you having trouble sleeping or maybe getting sick more often than normal? Does your body and/or mind feel as though you just might be doing a bit too much training? If so, that’s a damn good sign that you probably are. Basically, if everything seems to be going well and you feel pretty good, I’d say keep on doing what you’re doing. On the other hand, if you’re starting to feel like crap and weight training performance isn’t going well (or at least as well as one should realistically expect in a deficit), I’d take that as a sign that it’s time to adjust and reduce something somewhere. And assuming you’re already doing everything else right (e. This doesn’t mean doing none whatsoever. It could just mean cutting back on the total number of days you’re doing it, or the duration you’re doing it for each time, or how intense your chosen form of it is. Just keep in mind however that reducing any aspect of cardio means you’re reducing calories burned, so your diet will need to make up the difference in order for your deficit to continue to be present. Which, in my opinion, is the ideal way for most people to be approaching fat loss anyway. By the way. It also includes an option for doing no cardio whatsoever if you happen to hate it as much as I do. Crucial Things to Do if You're Exercising for Weight Loss. If you're logging miles on the treadmill and hours in cycling class in the hopes of torching more calories, that's seriously sucky news. Here's how your body makes up for the major calories you torch at the gym: As you get used to your workouts, you might not burn more calories—even if you're consistently active, says California- based trainer Mike Donavanik, C. S. C. S., “Think about your job. When you first started, there were some learning curves, it took more energy and more time, but you became more efficient,” he says. Exercise works the same way. Your body adapts to a specific demand. So you naturally become more efficient, and use less energy . After all, you want to lose fat, not muscle. One obesity study of 4. So how do you make sure every sweat session helps you burn more? Follow these five rules of exercising for weight loss. It stands for frequency, intensity, time, and type—the four factors that determine the exact stress you put on your body during a given workout, says Donavanik. Changing up any one of them “surprises” and challenges your body in a new way. Remember, as long as your body is forced to adapt to progressively challenging workouts, it’s going to burn more calories during every workout. It’s when your body gets used to your current workouts that things start to plateau. In one 2. 01. 3 study from Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse, people who performed a 2. HIIT workout torched 1. Plus, with HIIT workouts, you benefit from the “after burn” effect, which a steady- state cardio just won’t give you. Follow the study’s lead: Perform all- out effort for 2. Rest one minute, then repeat to complete a total of four rounds. Prioritize Clean Eating“If you don’t pay attention to your diet, you can work out every day as hard as you possibly can and not lose a single pound if your calories expended are equal to your calories consumed,” says Donavanik. What’s more, eating junk can make your workouts feel more difficult, so even if you think you’re pushing yourself to the max, you’re not, he says. And sub- max workouts, as you might have guessed, burn fewer calories. He recommends limiting added sugar and focusing on eating lean protein, healthy fats, and whole carbs from fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Pick Up Some Weights. More muscle = more calories burned. After all, while a pound of fat burns only two calories per day, a pound of muscle burns six—and takes up a lot less room, he says. That’s why, in a 2. Harvard School of Public Health study of 1. Don’t Forget to Fuel. While everyone thrives on a slightly different pre- and post- workout nutrition plan, research published in Sports Medicine shows that eating carbs before you hit the gym improves your performance during HIIT and endurance workouts alike. And tougher workouts burn more calories—both during and after your workout, Donavanik says. That explains why recent research published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that downing coffee (or any caffeine) an hour before your workout can boost your post- workout caloric burn by 1. After your workout, Donavanik recommends eating a meal that’s about 4. The combination will help your muscles recover, get your energy levels up, and have you burning more calories as your body repairs. Natura Colonix Cleanse Reviews.

The long- standing social threads of this country are being frayed by extreme partisanship that seems ominous for its long- term consequences. This is a divided land, with common ground shrinking as the rancor grows. And though the list of things a majority of Americans can agree on gets shorter by the day, it can be stated with certain confidence that a plurality of citizens like: pie, puppies and kittens, and Chris Pratt. Come to think of it, pie, with all that sugar and gluten, may lose in a battle with Pratt; and, unlike with pie, Americans can’t get their fill of the charismatic 3. Buzz. As the face of two franchises (Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World), he’s now one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood, bringing a much- needed touch of relatable humanity to CGI- dominated films. This month he reprises his role of Peter Quill (aka Star- Lord) in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. May 5), in which he’ll lead his band of merry mutants on another wisecracking quest to save the universe and create shareholder glee at Marvel Studios (the first Guardians grossed more than $7. Channel lovable goofball Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation—his irresistible appeal persuades series writers to gradually turn the character into a lovable goofball. His ease in front of the camera extends to magazine photo shoots as well. Game for just about anything, Pratt didn’t refuse any request from our photographers: He jumped and flipped on a trampoline, hopped on a horse, curled dumbbells, straddled a dirt bike, hugged a puppy—and that was all before lunch. At one point during the shoot, he sniffed his fingers in a mockery of the pretentious movie star pose—fitting for a guy with a blue- collar past who wins plum roles over Ivy League drama- school graduates. Pratt’s hardscrabble youth—he’s the son of a stern father who worked with his hands in various jobs and a mother who was a supermarket employee for decades—may not have included training in Shakespearean soliloquies growing up in Lake Stevens, WA, but it’s taught him how to keep his head as he established himself as one of the biggest stars on the planet.“I’m a worker, a guy meant to do a physical job,” says the guy who raised money for a new rec center in his hometown. That’s what my grandfather did. It’s the type of work I’d be doing if there were no such thing as acting.”Luckily, his films usually have a fairly physical side: “When you do movies that are action- based, you’re running and jumping, diving, rolling, getting out of the way, doing stunts, being strung up on wires—and doing all the prep that’s involved in that. There’s a certain Zen to it,” he says. It’s therapeutic. I like hard, physical work.”As established as Pratt is as a Hollywood player, he often feels out of place, like a pair of barbecue tongs in a tea house. He may have left his working- class town of 3. He’d rather pop off a few rounds at the local shooting range than spend a night at the Ivy. A practicing Christian, he attends church. And though he’s married to a successful actress—Faris grew up just 4. Even though I’ve lived here longer than I’ve ever lived anywhere in my life, I’ve always considered myself an outsider here—and that’s to my benefit, I think,” Pratt says. While he doesn’t feel judged by others for eschewing the usual A- list lifestyle, he believes the film industry ignores stories about people like his parents, to the detriment of both audiences and studios.“I don’t see personal stories that necessarily resonate with me, because they’re not my stories,” Pratt says. The voice of the average, blue- collar American isn’t necessarily represented in Hollywood.”Though he’s under contract for the aforementioned Marvel sequels, Pratt is a quick study, and as he learns more about the movie- making process, he’d like to tackle a project that would correct that deficit.“I have a script I wrote that’s very personal about my life, that I’ve written almost more as an acting exercise than something I’d produce,” he says. Be friendly,’” he says. You’re either the red state or the blue state, the left or the right. Not everything is politics. And maybe that’s something I’d want to help bridge, because I don’t feel represented by either side. I do feel like I relate to everybody—to the struggles of people both out here and where I grew up. I feel like I could have a beer or a meal with just about anyone and find something to relate to.“Maybe that’s what I’d want to try to express in my work if I were to write and create something, because it’s a damn shame. I don’t feel we have to be at war with each other like we are, and it’s just getting worse.”For most people, healing the divide would seem a futile gesture. But Chris Pratt is the common ground. His optimism and determination is distinctly American. The regular guy/movie star is an improbable invention, yet here he is, living a Frank Capra life in a David Lynch world. If anybody can bring Joe Six- Pack to La La Land, it’s Pratt. He certainly believes the American experiment is worth saving.“There are a lot of people who were born in other countries who have come here and made a fortune, and that is the American dream,” says Pratt. The author is trying to protect us from blindly following a program not aimed at normal people. Personally, I did GOMAD and got pretty. Does Whey Protein Cause Acne? Could whey protein be making your acne worse? So you’re taking whey protein for muscle building. Hey, I get it! I’ve been there. On the evils of wheat. William Davis on why it is so addictive, and how shunning it will make you skinny. You’re probably breaking out with some acne, too. And you’re wondering, “Could whey protein be causing my acne?”And the answer would be, yes! At least, it’s definitely contributing to your acne, and here’s why. What is whey protein, anyway? I’ll keep this short. Whey protein is one of the two main proteins in cow’s milk (the other being casein). Whey protein powder is made from whey, a by- product of cheese making. It’s an almost neon- yellowish liquid that’s strained off in the initial draining of most cheeses. In other words, whey is dairy, and essentially, that’s why it causes acne and must be avoided. One secret ingredient in whey that causes breakouts. Whey causes acne for several reasons, and one reason (we think) is because whey contains a hormone called IGF- 1 (insulin- like growth factor 1). This hormone is meant for baby cows to make them grow big and strong while they’re drinking their mothers’ milk. Humans also make IGF- 1 – you got it in your mother’s milk if you were breastfed, and you get some every time you drink a glass of milk (or a whey protein shake). IGF- 1 makes baby cows grow fast, and it also makes us humans build muscle faster, which is one reason why whey is so widely used for muscle building (other than the fact that it makes it easy to down 5. IGF- 1 is normally regulated by your body, which has insanely complex systems of checks and balances to make sure your hormones don’t get out of whack (and cause problems like acne). But if you’re straight drinking the stuff, you’re throwing alien IGF- 1 into the mix, which screws up your hormones. Detox your diet and lifestyle and get rid of acne for good, with Clear Skin Forever. Tell Me More! How does IGF- 1 from whey cause acne? Here’s the basics of how IGF- 1 from whey triggers your skin to create acne: IGF- 1 makes your skin produce excess oil. IGF- 1 tells your skin cells to multiply too fast (so your pores get clogged more often with dead skin cells)IGF- 1 glues dead skin cells together inside your pores before they can escape normally (through a complex signaling mechanism), meaning more clogged pores. In addition to these problems, most whey protein powder has actually been pasteurized twice, which denatures the proteins and forms complex protein + sugar cross links that are very difficult for your body to digest. If you’re also eating gluten (which damages your gut lining and allows food particles to pass through), chances are these large alien molecules are crossing into your bloodstream and wreaking small amounts of inflammatory havoc on your skin (i. Whey spikes your insulin, worsening acne. It’s no secret that dairy products spike your insulin three to six times as much as they should, judging by their low glycemic index. The problem with spiking your insulin like this is that it tends to worsen acne, in a similar fashion to IGF- 1. The two hormones are closely related and interact with each other in ways that we don’t fully understand – but the most important thing to remember is that whey protein (as protein powder, or in milk / dairy products) triggers this insulin- spiking response in your body, which may be an additional mechanism for how whey contributes to acne. It still causes acne. Other acne- causing ingredients in whey protein powders. In addition to the IGF- 1 in all whey protein, most off- the- shelf whey protein powders contain loads of artificial flavorings, sugar, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, and just basically artificial everything. These ingredients can also cause acne, and create an extra toxin load for your body to deal with. Yes, it’s true: 1. What about high- quality whey protein? I’ve tried grass- fed whey from New Zealand, low- temperature processed whey protein isolate and concentrate, and several other 1. And that’s pretty conclusive evidence to me, considering that the rest of my diet is a completely clear- skin diet (which I show you how to do in my book). Cut out the whey if you want clear skin! I’m pretty opinionated on this. If you haven’t read my milk and acne article, read it now. Milk is the #1 worst thing for acne, along with all other forms of dairy – skim milk, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, yogurt, you name it (aside from grass- fed butter, which I don’t believe contains enough IGF- 1 to cause problems, and which contains beneficial and hard- to- find compounds like CLA, omega- 3s, and Vitamin K2). Whey protein is derived from cow’s milk, so if you’re eating whey protein and you’ve got acne, try removing it and see if your skin improves. Mine certainly did! What about soy protein? Avoid like the plague! Seriously, soy has strong estrogenic activity in the body, and that’s not something you want to muck around with if you’re dealing with acne. Soy phytoestrogens fit neatly into your body’s own estrogen receptors, but don’t activate them fully, disrupting the complex ebb and flow and feedback loops of your body’s hormonal system. I strongly advise you to avoid soy protein. What about beef protein / Carnivor? Beef protein powder seems like a good idea, but I haven’t had good success with it (read: I got some breakouts). Carnivor, in particular, has added creatine and BCAAs which I seem to react to (when I’ve taken them individually). These are known to boost DHT and IGF- 1 and free T levels, which can be a great thing for packing on muscle, but NOT a great thing if you’re trying to avoid getting acne. So keep a close watch on your skin if you want to try it. I’d say eating beef would be a much safer way of getting your proteina if you do find that you react to Carnivor or other beef protein. Alternatives to whey for building muscle (that don’t cause acne)There are all kinds of other vegan protein powders out there, like hemp protein and pea protein and brown rice protein, but I’m just not a fan. First, they don’t taste very good (chalky, gritty, etc.), and second, I just think getting protein from meat is more complete, more effective, and stimulates your muscle- building hormones in a natural way that doesn’t tend to cause acne. Eating red meat boosts your testosterone and helps build muscle. It contains heme iron which improves oxygen transport in your body, potentially increasing your maximum force output (and strength). Red meat also contains naturally- occurring creatine, for which aspiring bodybuilders have been paying loads of money for the last several decades. And yes, red meat even contains branched chain amino acids! Non- red meat like chicken, pork, and fish also supports muscle growth through high- quality, complete proteins, BCAAs, and high mineral content. I’m a huge fan of the Paleo diet, as it’s the only diet I’ve found with two very important characteristics: It cures acne. It’s sustainable and nutritionally complete (i. It’s better for your skin than whey protein, and will support muscle growth as long as you’re eating enough. Eat this kind of meat whenever possible. Eat grass- fed meat as much as possible. Avoid factory- farmed meat like the plague. It contains synthetic hormones, heavy metals, PCBs, agricultural pollutants, hormone disruptors (very bad for acne), and low- quality inflammatory fats (omega- 6s) which lead to increased inflammation / redness / swelling of acne. Grass- fed meat contains cancer- protective CLA, anti- inflammatory omega- 3 fats, and many other awesomely healthy nutrients that factory farmed meat doesn’t. Which meat is best for muscle building? Red meat. No question about it. It has the most creatine, the most heme iron, the most nitric- oxide boosting abilities, and boosts your testosterone the most (and that’s good for the ladies, too, as women also need testosterone to build muscle, and no, it will not make you look like the Hulk! It will just make you lean, strong, and sexy). This means grass- fed beef, bison, venison, elk, and all other grass- fed (or wild) animals that produce red meat. Next best is probably wild- caught fish. The fattier the better, because the omega- 3 fats will help shorten your recovery time after working out. The next best meat is grass- fed pork. I mean truly 1. 00% grass- fed pork (not “pastured” pork, which usually means pigs raised on pasture, but fed corn and grains!). Check out pastured pork here: http: //www. I have yet to try Slanker’s grass- fed pork, but they say their pigs actually produce red meat, not white meat. I have eaten pork from heritage pigs in France that were raised in the woods, and while they were fed some grain, their meat was still incredibly dark and red- meat- like, so I can’t wait to try Slanker’s truly, 1. It’s pretty affordable, too, compared to grass- fed meat in general, so it’d be a great thing to stock your freezer with. And last are chicken and turkey. I’m not saying never eat chicken or turkey, as they’re still much healthier than grains, beans, soy, tofu, gluten, milk, whey, and all other Frankenproteins. But they contain the highest amounts of omega- 6 fats, and not enough omega- 3s to balance them out. It’s just how the birds grow. If you’ve ever seen chicken schmaltz (chicken fat), you can see it’s much jello- like than, say, bacon fat or beef tallow, because it contains lots more omega- 6 fat and not as much saturated fat (which, at the risk of throwing one too many curveballs, is actually healthy for you, as the science is now showing). But what about my post- workout protein shake? Don’t sweat it. You don’t need it to gain muscle. Just make sure you eat a meal with protein within 1- 2 hours after your workout. A pound of grass- fed ground beef is my favorite post- workout meal. If you’re really going for muscle building, eat a few sweet potatoes along with the beef, pork, chicken, or other meat. You Need Food and Water in Order to Live.

For many years I suspected that I had some form of thyroid problem based on my own research and symptoms like dry skin, occasional fatigue, trouble losing weight after having a baby, and hair thinning, but I was never able to get answers from conventional tests which showed that my T3 and T4 thyroid hormones were in the normal range. Thankfully, I found an amazing doctor who specializes in hormones and endocrine problems and with additional blood testing and a thyroid ultrasound, he was able to finally figure out what I was struggling with: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (an autoimmune condition where the body creates antibodies to the thyroid). What are Autoimmune Problems? It turns out that many different disorders and diseases are autoimmune in nature but they manifest in different ways. As the Paleo Mom explains: Autoimmune disease is caused by the immune system losing the ability to differentiate proteins belonging to your own body with proteins belonging to a foreign invader (like a bacteria, virus or parasite). What causes symptoms is the build up of damage to cells, tissues and/or organs in the body–damage caused by your own immune system attacking those cells. Which proteins/cells are attacked is what separates once disease from another. In Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, the thyroid gland is attacked. In Rheumatoid Arthritis, the tissues of your joints are attacked. In psoriasis, proteins within the layers of cells that make up your skin are attacked. However, the root cause is the same. Genetic predisposition to autoimmunity makes up about one third of your risk of developing an autoimmune disease. The other two thirds of your risk come from environmental factors, which include: diet, lifestyle, infections (both prior and persistent) exposure to toxins, hormones, weight, etc. While you cannot control your genetics or whether or not you had mono as a kid, you do have an immense amount of control over your diet and lifestyle (and the extent that these affect hormones and weight and even toxin exposure). By removing the foods that contribute to a leaky gut, gut dysbiosis (the wrong numbers, relative quantities, or types of microorganisms typically growing in the wrong locations in your gut), hormone imbalance, and that stimulate inflammation and the immune system, you can create the opportunity for your body to heal. By addressing important lifestyle factors and changing your focus to eating nutrient- dense foods that support optimal gut health (and optimal health of your gut microorganisms), that restore levels of important nutrients and provide all of the building blocks that your body needs to heal and properly regulate the immune system, that help resolve inflammation and support organ function, you create an environment in your body conducive to healing. Why Other Diets May Not Work. From my understanding, once the body has an autoimmune reaction, it can sometimes be necessary to remove a wide variety of potentially inflammatory foods for a short time and then reintroduce to test the response. The idea is similar to the theory behind the GAPS protocol but geared toward addressing autoimmune issues instead. Since the body is in a state of heightened immune response, removing these foods can help it get back into a state of balance and reduce the autoimmune reaction. Technically, an autoimmune disease cannot be “cured”, but in many cases, it is possible to put the condition into remission with careful diet and lifestyle changes. My Experience. I switched to an autoimmune protocol diet after being diagnosed with Hashimotos in hopes of giving my immune system a little time to recover. I was hopeful that it would be beneficial, but I was AMAZED at how quickly it helped. Within the first week, I saw my bloating go away, my thyroid nodule felt noticeably smaller, I had more energy (after the first couple of days), and my skin improved. Over the course of the almost two months I did the strict protocol, I lost some of my stubborn weight and felt incredibly better. It also helped me identify foods that I was not responding well to, but that I didn’t realize were problematic (like eggs, which was confirmed by blood test later). I was able to reintroduce many of the foods after that time without a problem and I felt continually better (until I created a flare by not sleeping and stressing about finishing my book). Sleep and stress are both huge factors in overall health and are especially important for those with any kind of health condition. The Specifics of the Autoimmune Diet. The general idea of the autoimmune diet is that you are removing any potentially inflammatory foods, but the specifics are a bit more difficult. Some sources consider foods like fruit and sweet potatoes ok, while others do not. For reference, some sources that I find most helpful are: This particular post from the Paleo Mom is really helpful in understanding what foods are considered safe and which ones to temporarily avoid. I’ll also be posting more autoimmune friendly recipes and meal plans soon, but those are great resources for getting started. You can download the complete food list I used by clicking here (PDF). It can seem overwhelming, but this way of eating is actually relatively simple if you follow a template. My typical day on the autoimmune diet was: Breakfast– A scramble of meat and cooked vegetables, a cup of homemade bone broth, some fermented vegetables, and supplements. Lunch– A huge salad with leftover protein (meat, offal or fish) and a small piece of fruit, a cup of bone broth, fermented water kefir or kombucha and olives. Dinner– A stir fry with some type of protein (meat, offal, seafood) with a lot of vegetables and allowed spices, evening supplements and at least 1 cup of healthy starch like cooked winter squash, pumpkin, etc. I also made a lot of stuffed squashes and soups. We rely heavily on big salads, stir frys and casseroles while on the autoimmune diet. When I first started, it seemed like I couldn’t eat anything and I was depriving myself of everything, but it is important to remember that many times the body is deficient in certain nutrients because of an autoimmune disease so during the course of the 3. I focused on extensively nourishing my body with as many high quality proteins, vegetables and healthy fats as I could consume. I may have been tired of my food choices at times, but I certainly never went hungry. I also focused on consuming a TON of vegetables during this time, after talking to Dr. Terry Wahls and reading her book, The Wahls Protocol. Wahls emphasizes the importance of consuming at least 9 cups of vegetables a day, especially brightly colored vegetables, leafy greens, and onions and garlic. Other Factors. Diet is hugely important for all aspects of health, and for me, it became even more important after being diagnosed with autoimmune disease, but it is by no means the only factor. Personally, I found that these factors were equally important to recovery for me: Sleep. It is my nemesis. I love to stay up late and skimp on sleep so I can get more done. My body does not love this. I’ve found that when I sleep at least 8- 8. I see my health markers improve (blood tests, fasting blood glucose, etc). Stress reduction. Also a tough one for me, but stress can have as much of an impact as diet on gut health and hormone levels. I found that even with a good diet, I started to notice symptoms creeping back in while under the stress of finishing my book. Supplements. I hesitated to include this part because if diet, stress and sleep aren’t under control, this won’t help at all, but I found certain supplements helped tremendously once I had optimized other factors. I personally take: WP- Throid thyroid medication (under the care of my doctor), Betaine HCL with protein meals, 5- MTHF and Methyl- B1. Folate, Probiotics, Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Cortisol support, Omega- 3s, Vitamin D (and sunshine daily in the morning), Magnesium, L- glutamine, Gelatin, and Vitamin C. I would highly recommend seeing a good functional medicine doctor and finding out what you personally need before taking any supplements. Autoimmune Diet Encouragement. This diet is difficult. So is pregnancy. Sometimes the best things in life require some work and denial of self. An elimination diet is temporary and it gives you a window into your own body and what you need to eat for optimal health. Don’t let is cause you extra stress. Don’t let this keep you up at night. Try to focus on nourishing and loving your body and providing it with the building blocks it needs to function optimally.
